ELECTIONS 2010: Working to provide fair election coverage for all candidates

The following is an open letter to all candidates in the running for municipal, county, and school board positions in Wellington County.

The Wellington Advertiser is planning extensive coverage of candidates, debates, and issues for the coming municipal election on Oct. 25.

In early to mid-September we will be printing photos and brief biographies of all candidates in the county.

We need all candidates to tell us about themselves – no more than 100 words. We understand that is short, but we have dozens of candidates to cover (seven municipalities, plus the county, and school boards).

In the interest of fairness, we need to be able to provide equal space for each candidate who chooses to submit the information.

Please open with basic details, such as your background (how long you have lived in the municipality, political history), family, occupation and/or hobbies, but make sure to include a sentence or two about why you are running. Keep in mind the following guidelines:

no longer than 100 words. We will be very strict on the word count and even cut you off mid-sentence if you go over. We do not want to alter the meaning of something you write because we have to edit it down;

no attacks or critiques of other specific candidates will be permitted;

– keep it general and stay away from specific election issues (we will be getting into specific issues in later editions);

– feel free to send it in the body of the email or as an attachment (Word, Wordpad, etc.)

We also need a head and shoulders photo from each of you. Please use the highest resolution possible (do not condense it) and try to have a light, plain background. Try and send both the photo and biography as one email.

Please have those two items emailed back to News@wellingtonadvertiser.com (or delivered in person on a disc) by no later than Sept. 13 at 3pm. That will allow us to get working on layout.

After that, inclusion within our election section cannot be guaranteed.

To date, we’ve been contacting those who have already filed as email addresses become available.

Late filing candidates will be contacted as they file, with the same request, but we’d like to get a jump start on this if we can.

Once printed within the Wellington Advertiser, the profiles will be posted online at www.wellingtonadvertiser.com along with other election-related materials,

Please inform the Advertiser if you are no longer running or have changed the position you are seeking in the election.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.
