ELECTIONS 2010: Voters lists have many restrictions; designed to protect privacy

Minto officials have offered an explanation of the voters’ list.

Municipalities have an opportunity to change it if needed so someone can vote.

Are you on the voters’ list?

A voter’s list is available at the clerk’s department in municipal offices from Sept. 1 on election day.

The Municipal Elections Act does not allow the voters’ list to be posted in a public place. It cannot be used for commercial purposes and, only upon written request and under certain conditions, is it available to candidates, local boards, municipalities, and MPs and MPPs.

The list is compiled before each election by the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) which maintains it. MPAC forwarded a preliminary list of electors to the Town of Minto at the end of July, and is being brought up to date.

To make changes

An application to make changes must be filed with the clerk. Application forms will be available at the municipal office.

Changing a name or information can be done from 8:30am on Sept. 7 to 8pm Oct. 25.  An Application to Amend the Voters’ List (Form EL15) can be used to:

– Add the applicant’s name to the list;

– correct the applicant’s information on the list;

– delete the applicant’s or a family member’s name (deceased, moved, other); and

– revise the applicant’s school support status and Canadian citizenship

To remove a persons name from the list can be done only from 8:30am on Sept. 7,  to 5pm Sept. 10. An application for removal of a name from Voters’ List can be used to delete another person’s name (deceased, moved, other).

The application shall be in writing and filed in person, by the applicant or his or her agent; or by mail by the applicant. Electronic or facsimile copies are not accepted.

If in person, the applicant or agent must make a declaration and sign the form in the presence of the clerk or designate. By signing the form, the person is declaring the applicant is:

– a Canadian citizen;

– has attained the age of 18 on or before the voting date; and

– is  entitled to be an elector on voting day.

Staff will need to know:

– the name of elector and their previous qualifying and mailing addresses;

– elector’s current qualifying address and if they are an owner, spouse, or tenant; and,

– elector’s birth date, and school support.

Without that information, staff are unable to update the necessary record of information and you may not have the chance to be counted in the 2010 election.

For more information, check the Town’s 2010 municipal election website or call at 519-338-2511.
