Drew barbecue raises $20,000 for man burned in February

An annual barbecue that’s been held for over 30 years in this small community has raised approximately $20,000 for a local man who was burned after an accident in his home.

On July 14, the community gathered for a barbecue, silent auction and musical entertainment with the ultimate goal of raising money for Brent Crispin.

In February, Crispin was injured when a flashback occured while he was attempting to light a corn stove. He said he managed to roll in some snow to extinguish the flames. He then made his way to the home of his boss, who was able to get him to the hospital.

Crispin said that was the last thing he remembers. About 70 per cent of his body was burned, and he was put into a coma for four weeks.

Five months after the accident, Crispin was at the barbecue and called the community response “unbelievable.”

“Words can hardly describe the feeling that I got when I found out that my neighbours and everybody, what they are up to,” he said.

The money raised will help Crispin with expenses incurred since the accident.

Drew Community Centre board chairman Brian Darroch said the money raised at the event was “awesome for a little crossing in the road.” He added he was happy with the “great community support.”

The board sold 450 tickets, selling out three weeks prior to the annual event. This isn’t the first fundraiser barbecue they’ve held, either.

In 2016, the barbecue raised about $17,000 to a assist local woman, who was seriously injured in an automobile accident on April 27, 2016.

In 2017, the board donated $2,500 from the proceeds of the barbecue to the Harriston Kinsman to assist with relief efforts following the flood on June 23, 2017.

“That’s what’s nice about being part of a rural community … is just the generosity of businesses and everything,” said Darroch.

“We have good support from the rural towns.”

Organizers wished to thank those who attended as well as businesses and individuals that donated, the volunteers, Barry and Kim Gray for auctioneering and Dunc Lamond and band for performing.
