Development fee raises costs for homeowners

Homebuilders will have to come up with some additional money after Wellington County adopted its new development charge fees.

County council approved the new fees at its June 28 meeting.

Development charges are levied to cover cost of road, sewer and water associated with new building activity connected to municipal services.

The new fee schedule was presented to council by Gary Scandlan of Watson and Associates Economists the firm charged with preparing a report and the fee schedule.

“The largest component in your increase is roads,” Scandlan said of the costs covered by the charge.

The new charge will see builders pay a $2,706 up from the previous charge of $2,415.

Apartment construction will see a charge of $1.542 for an apartment with two or more bedrooms and a bachelor or one-bedroom fee of $1,040.

On the non-residential side the fee is $1.72 compared to $1.68 previously.

“Development charges are things we love to hate,” councillor Gary Williamson said.

“I think it’s important we have a development charge and keep it up to date.”

Adjustments can be made annually to the fee.
