County named safest community in Canada

Maclean’s magazine has named Wellington County as the safest community in the country.

“This recognition let’s all of Canada know that Wellington County is a safe place to live, do business and retire,” Warden Chris White said in a press release.  “This is an excellent example of what can be achieved when county council and the OPP have a strong working relationship."

The rankings, released last month, are based on analysis of Statistics Canada’s Crime Severity Index for the nation’s 100 largest cities and regions, along with municipal crime data for six offences: homicide, sexual assault, aggravated assault, robbery, breaking and entering, and auto theft.

“Effective policing has always been a key priority for the County,” stated Russ Spicer, chairman of the county's Police Services Board. “The county and the OPP will continue to provide responsive and efficient service to residents and visitors of Wellington.”

The nearby Town of Caledon had previously held the safest community title for the past four years.

"Wellington County OPP officers are committed to the safety and well-being of our residents,” said  Wellington CountyOPP Inspector Scott Lawson. "County council has been very supportive of the OPP’s programs and initiatives which help increase public safety and security.”
