County museum to host summer program series for families

For the eighth season, the Wellington County Museum and Archives is hosting a weekly series of eclectic activities for families and visitors in Wellington County.

Each Wednesday afternoon in July and August, from 1 to 4pm, a themed activity or presentation will take place. All programs are appropriate for families and adults of all ages.

Our summer activities kick off on July 2 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Museum Collection, with cake, museum trivia, and birthday party activities.

The rest of July is just as exciting. On July 9, the museum is celebrating bees. Visitors will have an opportunity to observe live bees do their pollinating work up close (safely of course).

The “Diamonds in the Ruff” dog agility show is back by popular demand on July 16.  On July 23, the museum will be overrun by creepy crawly critters as the Guelph Lake Nature Centre will bring some of their favorite creatures to the 1877 barn.

July ends with a bang as local musician Erick Traplin will be on hand in the 1877 Barn preforming some of his favourite family tunes. Bring your dancing shoes! Traplin will be preforming two shows at 1:30 and 3pm.

August starts with a popular annual tradition, the formal summer tea party. This event takes place on August 6, and brings a 1914 Red Cross fundraising theme and a presentation on the impact of the Great War on local food ways by food historian Carolyn Blackstock.  Book your tea time early as this event is always sold-out.

On August 13 we’re making candy, so bring your sweet tooth along.

On August 20 the museum celebrates two of Ontario’s favorite produce products: corn and peaches.

Finally, prepare to get messy as we finish off the summer on August 27 by making paper.

The tea party ($10) requires registration; contact reception at 591-846-0916.

All other afternoons are admission by donation and drop-in format with ongoing activities and scheduled events.  Children in attendance must be accompanied by an adult.
