Councillors grant themselves pay increase

Guelph-Eramosa councillors have given themselves a 2.5% raise this year.

As described in a new remuneration bylaw passed last week, the mayor’s pay will rise 2.5% from $14,361 to $14,720. Councillors will receive the same percentage increase and will be paid $9,813 this year – up from $9,574 in 2010.

Not included in the new basic remuneration figures are:

– annual increases equal to the percentage increase given to non-union township employees;

– $75 for each meeting beyond regular council meetings;

– a $500 annual mileage allowance for the mayor;

– a $110 per diem rate for all council members for meals and attendance at conferences, work shops, or legal trials; and

– reimbursement for registration,   accommodation and travel (to and from events, as well as local travel while attending) costs associated with attendance at conferences or workshops.

Mayor Chris White’s total pay for 2010, including additional meetings and expenses, was $39,173. White also makes over $76,000 for his role as warden of Wellington County.

The warden’s expenses are annually close to $10,000, which means if White’s expenses at both the township and county remain in line with past trends, he could make upwards of  $126,000 in 2011.
