Councillor concerned about recent vandalism

Perhaps the start of school will quash the increase in vandalism that seemed to take place throughout the township last month.

At council’s last meeting in August, councillor Jim Curry noted the “unfortunate” rash of vandalism and theft in the second half of that month that struck public and private property. He said the incidents have been relayed to OPP members who work with the community through its Neighbourhood Watch program.

While Curry specifically mentioned incidents in Drayton, there have also been reports of damages and thefts in the township’s other urban centres, specifically Alma.

“I was quite disappointed to come home from my family vacation [recently] to hear from neighbours that there has been a rash of vandalism in our small community,” Alma resident Monica Hall said in a letter to the editor sent to the Community?News and the Wellington Advertiser.

Hall explained the perpetrators, whom she called “quite nervy,” took a number of items from properties along her street, including her own garden ornaments and moon rays, the latter which were a  gift from her children for Mother’s Day.

Curry wondered what could be done about the vandalism and several councillors suggested the culprits are likely kids or adolescents.

Mayor John Green said officials shouldn’t worry about the culprits themselves, as much as they “should check with their parents.”
