Council awards Francis Street reconstruction tender

Wellington North council has awarded a contract for the Francis Street reconstruction project in Arthur to Steed and Evans Limited at a cost of $760,000.

The tender results were presented to council on May 23.

The project includes reconstruction of Francis Street East from Charles Street West to George Street (Highway 6) and will include work on the sanitary sewer and waterworks. The township anticipates the project will start in late June.

The township received two bids for the project:

– Steed and Evans Limited of St. Jacobs at $760,000; and

– Moorefield Excavating Limited of Harriston at $820,102.

Both bids were under the capital project budget of $947,000 approved for 2017.

“They were actually very keen to land this job, so they made that known to Triton, who’s our representative for this project,” said interim public works director Derek McCaughan.

“They do good work and I’m very pleased that they came in well under (budget).”

McCaughan said there will be a meeting involving area residents on June 7.

Council approved the recommendation unanimously.
