Council approves trucks for departments

There were some successful local bidders when Centre Wellington council considered tenders for trucks and a grader at its June 13 committee of the whole meeting.

The recommendation came from a tender committee meeting of May 12.

A bid to supply two half-ton rated 4- by 4-pick-up trucks was won by Howes & Reeves, of Fergus. The bid was for $36,340, and the vehicles will be used by roads and water works staff.

Another tender of a half-ton 4- by 4-pick-up was awarded to Forbes Brothers Inc., of Brantford, for $22,500. It will be used by the water works department.

A third truck bid was won by Reliable Motors, of Fergus, for a small pick-up truck, at a cost of $20,430.

It will be used by the Parks and Recreation Department.

Councillor Walt Visser asked if the items are part of this year’s budget.

Treasurer Wes Snarr said they are.

He stated in his report the total of $88,760 compared favourably to the budgeted estimate of $127,000.

He also explained that the rules set by council allowed the tender committee to make the awards without specific council approval because they met the bidding rules and the purchase price is under $1-million.

The tender committee consists of Mayor Joanne Ross-Zuj, Chief Administrative Officer Michael Wood, Snarr, and the department head requiring the purchase, or a designate.

A fourth call for tenders, for a small four-door car for the building department, did not meet the rules set down because it was over budget. The committee did not award that tender because it exceeded the budget by $1,650.

Council also approved purchases by its tender committee from a May 25 meeting.

The first was a for a five-ton single axle cab and chassis truck with a reversible plow, wing, and sander.

That was won by Altruck Centres, of Guelph, for $194,800.

The second was for a motor grader costing $237,150, won by Nortrax Canada Inc., of Cambridge.

Both tenders met township criteria and were awarded by the committee.

Council ratified its committee decisions for the tenders at its June 20 council meeting.
