Construction values hit 10-year high in Town of Minto

Institutional and agricultural sectors drove the numbers as the Town of Minto experienced one of the busiest years for construction activity in the past decade.

Minto’s building department issued 199 permits in 2012, for construction valued at $22,496,000. That’s up by 55 permits and just over $7 million from 2011 totals of 144 permits and $15,469,000.

A 10-year review of building activity presented at the Jan. 22 council meeting showed 2012 was the second highest year in the past decade in terms of the number of permits issued – and “in terms of construction value it was by far our highest total in the past 10 years,” said CAO Bill White.

Single family residential units were down from last year, with 20 permits issued for $4,538,000 worth of construction, compared to 24 permits and $5,443,000 in 2011.

“What is up considerably is industrial development and also agricultural development and institutional as well,” said White, citing the new Wellington OPP station at Teviotdale, currently under construction, as an example of the latter. “It’s been a busy year, with lots going on in all sectors,” White commented.

Institutional construction accounted for almost $7.5 million of the 2012 total, compared to approximately $2.7 million in 2011.

Agricultural construction accounted for $3.4 million worth of construction, up from $944,000 the previous year.

Industrial construction value was actually down in 2012, at $2.6 million compared to $3.9 in 2011, but both figures were up sharply from the 2010 total of $511,000
