Conflict of Interest case moved to Oct. 20

It’s going to be at least another month before there is any resolution to a municipal conflict of interest charge against Erin town councillor Deborah Callaghan.

Earlier this summer, it was reported that Sept. 8 was set aside for a day-long hearing, but the matter has been adjourned to Oct. 20 at 10am in Guelph’s Superior Court.

In March, Erin resident Mark Adamiak submitted an allegation application to Guelph’s Superior Court, in which he contended Callaghan breached provisions of the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act multiple times by voting on town staff pay increases (including for her husband, fire chief Dan Callaghan) and a motion to proceed with a municipal operational review.

Callaghan is challenging the allegation. In an earlier interview, she stated, “I looked at this as a big picture/corporation increase and I honestly did not see it as just a fire department increase,” adding the vote increased councillor wages as well.

One of Adamiak’s goals was to have Callaghan deemed ineligible to run in the upcoming election. On Sept. 2, Callaghan said she does not intend to seek re-election, though she has until Sept. 12 at 2pm to change her mind.

That is the nomination deadline for municipal candidates.
