Compensation for crafty coyote kills near Conn

The Conn coyotes are at it again.

Council recently looked into a compensation request by John Manion, of RR1 Conn.

Livestock evaluator Glenn O’Rourke’s report to council stated there was a sign of struggle, blood trails in the area and a carcass dragged away from the kill area.

It also appeared the cow injured her right rear and front legs protecting her calf. A cow and her calf were killed.

O’Rourke cited tracks of about 10 coyotes.

While his report stated the regional predation risk is moderate, the incidences are increasing.

Although this was Manion’s first claim for 2009, he had made previous claims in 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2007.

Actions he has taken over the years to protect his livestock include penning livestock at night, providing protected birthing areas and lighting his yards.

As a result, O’Rourke indicated that Manion has taken reasonable measures to prevent predation.

Compensation was $360 for the newborn calf and $585 for the cow.

Council authorized the payment of $945 to Manion and agreed to pay O’Rourke $75 (plus mileage) as the livestock evaluator.

Broomhead asked if there is only a certain number of claims that can be made.

Clerk Lori Heinbuch said the claims can be up to $1,000 per year. She noted Manion has has had claims every other year since 2001.

“As long as it falls within the guidelines,” said councillor Ross Chaulk of approving the payments.
