Community mailboxes damaged, mail stolen
Police are seeking the public’s help after “numerous” community mailboxes were broken into and residents’ mail stolen last week.
On Feb. 1 Wellington County OPP received reports of incidents across the county as well as in neighbouring Waterloo Region and in Guelph.
Media relations officer Cheri Rockefeller said municipalities affected include Palmerston, Guelph-Eramosa, Centre Wellington and Maryhill.
Police say that sometime overnight on Jan. 31 someone pried open the main doors of the “superboxes” and accessed mail.
“Not all the mailboxes were successfully entered, which resulted in the main door being bent outward and deep gouges on the outside of the mailbox, below the main door,” the OPP stated in a press release.
“It is unknown how much mail has been taken or the estimate of damage done to the mailboxes.”
Rockefeller said the OPP encourages residents to remove mail daily from mailboxes and to report any suspicious activity observed.
