Clifford history detailed in book by local resident

For over 30 months, members of the 150th Community Anniversary and 2017 Clifford Homecoming committee have met on the second Saturday of the month to discuss preparations for Canada’s 150th birthday and Clifford’s homecoming.

On March 11, members were reminded of the book Clifford – A Scrapbook of Memories…Reveals a Village With a Past, which was compiled by Ray Schaus.

Schaus spent years gathering information by visiting museums and searching archives, reading Newspapers and talking face to face with people who lived the News.

The 346-page, hard bound book provides in Schaus’ words, “a scrap-book collection that surprisingly describes the history and events, as well as everyday life of the Village of Clifford and its citizens from first-hand, eye witness accounts. The information is in chronological order. Reading it will be like picking up a Newspaper and reading about what happened – for over 155 years.”

Schaus is a retired dairy/beef farmer who has lived on farms adjoining Clifford all his life. Semi-retired, he and his wife Dianne still deliver rural mail. As a hobby, Ray passes time researching family and local history.

He enjoys unearthing things forgotten in the years gone by.

The book covers Clifford through the years prior to 1836 and well into 2012 when the book was printed.
