Clifford cenotaph parkland project made possible by local efforts

It seems the cenotaph park in Clifford has undergone an extreme makeover of sorts, thanks to the efforts of local citizens.

The rededication of the parkland on April 19 was attended by members of council and the community.

Minto Mayor George Bridge said over the past few years members of Harriston’s Royal Canadian Legion head to Clifford each year to conduct services, “but they were not actually able to get down to the cenotaph itself, because it is in a low area and very muddy.”

As a result, he said it was difficult for veterans to march to the cenotaph. Services were being held in the community hall, with no visit to the cenotaph.

Bridge said one of the members of the Clifford Rotary Club had the idea of doing something in the park.

“It is their park; they’ve looked after it for years. They spearheaded a program of getting some partnerships together, and were able to get a grant from Veterans Affairs.”

Bridge added town staff were able to do some work as well.

The local Legion and Rotary Club also made significant contributions, Bridge added.

He said the renovated park area was able to be used at last year’s Remembrance Day services.

“Some veterans were in wheelchairs and they could go right down to the cenotaph itself.

“It was a great project and it was neat to see that. All of council was there [for the dedication].”
