Churches bring Hometown Nazareth to Butterfly Garden

St. James Anglican Church and Faith Lutheran Church have embarked on a new joint venture and are hosting a Vacation Bible School, Hometown Nazareth, where Jesus was a Kid.

The vacation Bible school runs from Aug. 22 to 26 between  9am and noon.

“We’ve wanted to hold a summer program for a long time” said Heidi May, one of the co-ordinators from Faith. “But we never seemed to get it organized, so when the invitation came to work with St. James we jumped at the chance.”

Helen Henderson, from St. James, knew a summer program would be well received but needed a few more volunteers to bring it together. She was thrilled when Faith officials returned her call.

Together both churches will turn the Butterfly Garden at St. James into Nazareth around the time Jesus was a boy.

Visiting kids will belong to the “tribes” of Israel, learn lively songs, visit the ancient marketplace, sample foods that Jesus might have eaten, meet Mary, Jesus’ mom, play games and make crafts.

“We are very excited about this week and are getting right into the spirit of ancient Nazareth, collecting woven blankets, baskets and pots” said Rosalee Voyce, co-ordinator from St. James.

“Both churches have worked together in the past, hosting midweek Lenten Services and study groups as well as Easter worship, so this is a logical joint venture” said Kim McGuire, Faith chairman.

Children are invited to register by calling 519-843-2844 or online at www.faithfergus.ca.

“There is no cost to attend as we want to welcome all interested kids, but we will be accepting a free-will donation,   which will support a mission project of the kids choosing,” said Ingrid Kebbel-Beer from Faith Lutheran
