Church ruins to be used in Elora Mill restorations

Stonework from a recently-demolished church in Hamilton is now being slated as building material for the Elora Mill project by Pearle Hospitality.

In a recent update to the township, Centre Wellington councillor Don Fisher commented on a recent Heritage Centre Wellington meeting.

“The big item on the agenda was the conservation plan for the Elora Mill project,” said Fisher.

Board members were shown various materials and finishes being proposed.

“It looks very exciting and one of the things they found out was that there was a major church demolished in downtown Hamilton,” Fisher said.

“Pearle (Hospitality) has got all the stone from that demolition and are stockpiling it on the south side of the river.”

He explained those materials will be used to assist in finishing the mill buildings on the north and south side of the river.

“That stone is probably as old as many of the original mill buildings,” Fisher suggested.
