Changes will open county voting process

Council endorsed amendments to the county procedural bylaw intended to make results from future warden and committee chairmen elections available and open to the public.

The changes were contained in an Administration, Finance and Personnel (AFP) committee report approved by council on Jan. 31.

The amendments were sent to the committee by clerk Donna Bryce after a complaint lodged by the Advertiser with the county’s closed meeting investigator Norm Gamble sparked a preliminary investigation on the county bylaw and election procedures.

“There was some serious discussions going on about one thing that took place during the warden’s election,” councillor John Green, head of AFP told council about the voting at council’s inaugural meeting in December. “Because of the recent information we had to release, the clerk will give final results after the inaugural.”

Gamble, in his preliminary investigation, found the county had no right to close the voting process in its procedural bylaw.

“This thing should be as clear as day,” Warden Chris White said of future elections. “I think we’ve covered off the concerns we had.”
