Centre Wellington mayor scheduled to rappel from bell tower

It was announced that Centre Wellington Mayor Joanne Ross-Zuj will soon rappel from the bell tower of the former Chalmer’s church – but it’s unclear whether that will actually happen.

In a recent press release for the grand reopening of One Axe Pursuits, it was stated the Guelph-based company has now moved into the renovated  Chalmer’s church in Elora.

The building is located almost next door to Victoria Park, where the company runs its zipline and rappelling business.

A grand opening is set for May 3 at the new location on Henderson Street.

The front half of the renovated church is for the business and the remainder to be used as living space. During the event, the front office of the building will be open for tours from 10am to noon.

Families are welcome and two professional face painters will be on staff offering free face or body painting.

While the News release stated Ross-Zuj would be rappelling from the old church Bell Tower at 10:30am on May 3, the mayor commented at council on April 15 “I’m going to reserve the right to decline.”

When asked if she’d actually agreed to the idea, Ross-Zuj laughed and said “Apparently.”

“They had me flying over the gorge at one point.”

She said there really wasn’t a conversation to talk her into it.

“There was a suggestion that this might be a great idea and it went forward.”

She quipped, “I had no support from the staff, who let the idea go through … so I guess I’m in for the long haul.”
