Beginning the week of May 12, Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health will offer six additional immunization clinics.
The clinics are for children over age of 18 months who have not had their second dose of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine.
“The measles outbreak shows us the importance of up-to-date immunization,” said Susan Otten, program manager for vaccine preventable diseases. “Many people are just not aware their child has not had a second dose of the MMR vaccine. Without the second dose, these children risk getting measles as well as being excluded from school if there is an outbreak at their school.”
Information letters about the clinics will be mailed to parents of elementary school children in Guelph for whom Public Health does not have records of them receiving two doses of measles vaccine. the city has seen at least eight cases of measles over the past five weeks.
Families with younger children who have not had their second MMR dose are encouraged to attend. Public Health asks that parents book an appointment to avoid line-ups. Clinic times and locations are:
– Crestwicke Baptist Church 400 Speedvale Avenue – May 12, 22 3to 7pm;
– WDG Public Health – 600 Southgate Drive, May 14, 21 3to 7pm;
– St. Peter Catholic School – 150 Westwood Road, May 15, 20 3 to 7pm.
