Cargo crime seminar

Over 80 people attended a cargo crime seminar here hosted by the Wellington County OPP on March 24 in Aboyne.

Representatives from the Canadian Border Services Agency, the Ontario Trucking Association and Insurance Bureau of Canada along with detectives from the Auto and Cargo Theft Unit of the York Regional Police Service gave presentations.

OPP Constable Cheri Rockefeller said cargo crime covers acts including theft, fraud, and hijacking and is also linked to smuggling and national security threats.  Each year, cargo theft costs the Canadian economy $5 billion.

The seminar was a chance  for law enforcement and business to share information in order to combat this crime.
