Fourteen residents of Arthur Caressant Care modeled for a calendar project to raise money for a new outdoor space.
The calendar showcases the residents’ hands holding a sentimental object or performing a hobby.
Cherlyn Altena, activity coordinator at Arthur Caressant Care, said the project was borne out of the need for a larger, accessible area in the stroll garden.
“We brainstormed different ideas of how we could try and raise money for this project,” said Altena.
“The thing that came to mind for us the most that would be fun and would involve the residents as well would be to do a calendar with photos of them.”
Altena enlisted Rachel Clark, of Rachel Clark Photography, to help with the project.
The calendar focuses on the residents’ hands and their hobbies. One plays the piano, another holds a teacup.
“Every resident that’s photographed in here is doing … unique hobbies and ones that really stand out and match that person,” said Altena.
One of the models, Minnie Williams, has her hands placed over a quilt.
Williams has been making quilts all her life.
“My son found a quilt that needed finishing and he gave it to a niece and her daughter to finish for us and that’s what the quilt was,” said Williams, adding it has sentimental value for her.
Williams said she was nervous at first.
“The first picture I saw of it, I said ‘my goodness, the hands look so terrible,’” she said.
She changed her mind when her family members saw the photos and were so happy with the results.
Clark said she found it interesting to work with hands as a subject.
“You kind of think hands, it’s all kind of going to look the same, but how different everyone’s hands actually look and putting them against different backdrops like this or in different scenarios really changes the look of them,” she said.
The calendars are available for $10 at The Plumber’s Wife, Where’s it at, Pimps and Pin Ups and All About Me in Arthur.
