Caressant Care celebrates volunteers at appreciation luncheon

Administrator Cathy Cook welcomed 26 volunteers, staff, and residents to the volunteer appreciation luncheon held recently at Caressant Care Nursing Home in Harriston. Her message to the volunteers was “You matter and make a difference by sharing your time and talent. You are committed to volunteer without reward. We are grateful for your care and support and glad you chose to attend the volunteer appreciation luncheon where we give back to you.”

She shared successes of the nursing home accreditation and how they continually strive to surpass the standards.

Pastor Doug Bott offered grace before everyone enjoyed a roast beef dinner with mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables and tossed salad with butter tarts and ice-cream for dessert.

Resident care coordinator Victoria Whaltham-Kingsley drew several names for the red geranium centrepieces.

Guest speaker Elizabeth Bott thanked the staff for daily giving of themselves to the residents. She thanked the volunteers whose generosity has a great effect on the staff and residents.

She showed a number of items to carry in a volunteer survival kit that reminds everyone to stay flexible, stick together, laugh, share stories and relax.

Activities coordinator Audrey Domm and assistant Jaylene Roswell presented Elizabeth Bott with a large planter of spring flowers. Jaylene expressed thanks to the volunteers outlining a number of qualities shown to the residents – generosity, willingness, understanding, empathy, compassion, patience, and dedication. Domm offered thanks and encouragement for those who provide skills and talents that bring success to the programs.

Resident Nancy Ellis shared a joke about not questioning volunteers abilities and how they make a difference to each resident. Resident Fred Piper said he feels without the volunteers he wouldn’t be doing much and they lift his spirits.

To volunteer, call 519-338-3700 and discover ways to share your time and talents with the residents.
