Cairns touts value of art and culture to the Centre Wellington community

Beverley Cairns of the Elora Arts Council sees both arts and culture as having particularly important value to the local community.

“I am particularly happy to be here today when the focus is on the cultural action plan. We are part of that plan which we think is a great value to the community.”

Cairns added that culture includes arts, Sports and many things.

She said organizations which help bring the arts to the public are very valuable as well as the individual artists.

And it was two of those artists who were recognized that night – Millie Cumming of Fergus and David Wilcox of Elora.

The council chamber and the main hall of Centre Wellington’s administrative centre in Elora host rotating exhibits of artwork from the community.

Cumming works with fibres, some hand-dyed and hand-painted fabrics and hand quilting.

Last month, Cumming won the national grand prize in a competition held in Waterloo Region.

David Wilcox studied photography in the mid ‘60s, and shot in many formats; mainly 35mm, 6mm x 6mm, 6mm x 7mm, and 4” x 5”.

While Wilcox spent his working years in heavy construction as a surveyor, inspector, field supervisor, and foreman for contractors, in 2005 at the age of 65 he started El Aura landscapes, and has been shooting, matting and framing prints for sale.

His showing in the council chambers is from a recent trip to West Australia and Hong Kong.

Mayor Joanne Ross-Zuj noted there were also a number of sculptures recently installed throughout Elora.
