Bridge replacement grant received

Wellington County has received a $610,300 federal grant to replace a one-lane bridge on the Guelph-Eramosa-Erin Townline.

The grant was announced by Wellington-Halton Hills MP Michael Chong and is from the Canada Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF). The work will be done on the Benham Bridge just south of County Road 124.

According to county engineer Gord Ough the bridge was built over the Eramosa River in 1915 and has been part of the county five-year plan for replacement. The county will pay the other half of the $1.2 million project.

“On behalf of county council, I’d like to thank the government of Canada for their investment in helping replace the Benham bridge,” Warden Chris White said. “This project will improve road safety and will have a positive impact on our local economy, by creating jobs in Wellington.”

Work approved under the program has to be completed by March 31, 2014.
