Bottle drive supports Centre Wellington Food Bank

Bottle drive – Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the Fergus Legion and the Centre Wellington Optimist Club teamed up for a bottle drive over the Victoria Day long weekend in May. With thousands of bottles and cans collected, they were able to present a cheque to the Centre Wellington Food Bank for $5,000 on July 16.

The organization would like to thank Shoppers Drug Mart, Grand River Pharmacy and Flemming Fast Freight, which donated a truck to hold all the cans and bottles and the many volunteers. Optimist Club president Jim Dandy had hoped to trade in the truckload of cans and bottles, but COVID-19 set them back six weeks before the truck could be unloaded. Dandy estimates that around 40 people volunteered to help with the project.

Presenting the cheque along with a number of volunteers are: Dandy, third from the right, and Legion president Randy Graham, sixth from the left; to food bank coordinator Jackie Andrews, fifth from right, and food bank manager Fred Aleksandrowicz, fourth from right.
