Arboretum to host butterfly, moth and dragonfly workshops

GUELPH – The Arboretum in Guelph will be holding three full-day workshops on butterflies, moths and dragonflies.

On July 7 from 9am to 4pm, Andalyne Tofflemire will educate participants about butterflies and how to identify them in the wild.

Topics covered will include butterfly natural history, capture techniques, field identification, tagging, and migration as well as creating and maintaining butterfly habitat.

The workshop includes outside catching and identifying the butterflies of The Arboretum. The cost of this workshop is $104 per person.

Andalyne Tofflemire will also teach the moth workshop on Tuesday, July 8 from 1 to 4:30pm with a break for dinner and then the second half of the session from 8:30 to 11pm.

Participants are introduced to what makes a moth so unique; learn about the common families or groups of moths in Guelph, and how to find, identify and appreciate moths. The afternoon session will cover basic ID skills and will include time in the field.

The evening portion will include using black light and moth baiting, to experience the nocturnal world of moths and continue practicing identification. The cost of this workshop is $104 per person.

Chris Earley will teach the dragonfly workshop on Wednesday, July 9 from 9am to 4pm. He will discuss the over 150 species of Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies) that call Ontario home.

Many are common in  Guelph. Most species can be identified with a field guide and pair of binoculars. Participants will learn about dragonflies, and see why they are an important part of our local ecosystems.

This workshop includes an outdoor component of catching and identifying the dragonflies of The Arboretum.  The cost of the workshop is $107 per person.
