Annual charity barbecue is May 11

On May 11, between 10am and 4pm, visitors to any of the more than 430 M&M Meat Shops locations across Canada  – including several in Wellington – can support the 25th Anniversary M&M Meat Shops Charity BBQ Day benefitting the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada (CCFC).

This year’s fundraising goal is $1.3 million. Supporters will receive a hamburger or hot dog, a drink and a bag of chips for a minimum donation of $3. All proceeds raised will go directly to Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis research.

Canada has among the highest reported prevalence of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis – two similar yet distinct conditions also known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) – in the world. There are more than 233,000 Canadians suffering from IBD and the incidences have been rising, particularly since 2001, and significantly so in children under the age of 10.

“What began in 1989 with just a handful of stores has evolved into a national event at more than 430 M&M Meat Shops locations across Canada. We are celebrating 25 years of fundraising for the CCFC and Charity BBQ Day has definitely become an expression of who we are as a company. The commitment of our franchisees and volunteers in communities from coast-to-coast is phenomenal,” says Mac Voisin. “Our goal is to help find a cure so that our event can become an annual celebration of the cure for IBD.”

“We are extremely grateful to those who support M&M Meat Shops Charity BBQ Day,” says CCFC CEO, Dr. Kevin Glasgow. “Our 25-year-partnership with M&M Meat Shops has made an enormous difference in our effort to find a cure for IBD and improve the lives of children and adults affected by these chronic diseases. These donations, combined with the hard work of thousands of volunteers, raise a significant portion of our annual research funds in just one day.”

Money raised through this event will help CCFC raise funds to:

– invest in IBD research to foster advances in prevention, treatments, cures and health policy;

– educate patients, families, industry and government about IBD;

– increase public awareness of IBD and the Foundation;

– advocate to governments and stakeholders on behalf of those affected by IBD.
