Accident claims life of police dog
A dedicated seven-year veteran of the Wellington County OPP has died.
Dekker, a 9-year-old German shepherd, passed away on Jan. 16 after being hit by a car.
At approximately 7:15am, a canine officer was exercising the police service dog in a field on Sideroad 11 in Centre Wellington Township.
Police say Dekker, who had served the Wellington County OPP for approximately seven years, ran across the road and was struck by a passing car.
He was transported to a local veterinary hospital where he died from his injuries.
The driver of the vehicle and the dog handler were not injured.
Traffic was re-routed around the area for approximately an hour while police investigated the incident.
The investigation is ongoing.
