Aberfoyle Market supports trailway fundraiser

It was only a matter of time before their paths were crossed – in this case the Kissing Bridge Trailway and the Aberfoyle Farmers Market.

Aberfoyle Market organizers recently announced their support for the Kissing Bridge Trailway’s Spring on the Trail fundraiser on May 12.

In a press release, Robin Wayne said “As a market committed to building connections between communities we believe that this event provides an excellent opportunity for Guelph residents to discover some of the smaller communities that are nestled in the countryside around Guelph while they enjoy a recreational activity right on their doorstep.”

Vendors of the Aberfoyle Farmers’ Market will provide a variety of coupons as prizes for participants for supporting the trail. As an added feature to the Ariss event, there will be a mini market featuring fresh boxed lunches, fresh direct trade locally roasted coffee, Ontario apple cider, locally made rabbit pepperettes, apples and butter tarts.

As a small volunteer run organization in a rural community, those involved in the Aberfoyle Market appreciate the opportunity that the event provides.

Although the event is focused primarily on one trail, trails in general can be an important form of rural recreation and are often located on land owned and worked by farmers.

In keeping with the focus on featuring real farmers at the market, Aberfoyle Market volunteers see rural trails as providing another way people can connect with their local food system. Also, the event invites the participants to discover the communities featured along the trail.

That approach fits with the Aberfoyle Market’s vision of being a gateway to the broader natural and business community.

Aberfoyle Market’s family of vendors come from small communities, just like those along the trail, so it sees no problems with supporting an out-of-town event.

Those places include area such as Moffat, Ariss, Millgrove, Campbellville, Rockwood, Flamborough and of course Aberfoyle.  Plus, the community has a large number of walking trails that showcase the varied terrain of the area and provide recreational opportunities all year round.

The market opens with more than 30 vendors at 8am on May 26. For more information about the Aberfoyle Farmers’ Market and the variety of walking trails available in our area visit at www.afma.ca.
