School volunteers and teachers headed the list of the Upper Grand District School Board’s ten Everyday Hero award winners for 2010.
The annual awards, now three years old, celebrate the unsung heroes of the school system who go out of their way to make a difference in the lives and learning of students. The program is sponsored by the board’s ten trustees.
The awards ceremony was held on June 2 beginning at John F. Ross Collegiate Vocational Institute in Guelph.
This year’s winners are:
– Albert Boutin and David Duke, teachers, College Heights SS and Willow Road PS, Guelph;
– Elise Dandy, school volunteer, J. D. Hogarth PS, Fergus;
– Lynne Flewwelling, school council chairman, Maryborough PS, Moorefield;
– Sarah Garrett, teacher, King George PS, Guelph;
– April King and Mike Parsons, teachers, Centennial CVI, Guelph;
– Andrea Kretz, teacher, John F. Ross CVI, Guelph;
– Meghan Lowry-Freitag, teacher, Centennial CVI, Guelph;
– Jane Rocher, teacher, Paisley Road PS, Guelph;
– Ian Turner, teacher, Wellington Heights SS, Mount Forest; and
– Kathryn Cooper, parent volunteer and the parents of the “Hawk goes Green” project, Ross. R. MacKay PS, Hillsburgh.
The criteria for the award are:
– performance of duties at a high level at all times;
– a significant school or system-related achievement;
– a specific innovation or achievement of significant value or importance to the system; or
– a unique circumstance considered worthy of recognition by the board.
Candidates may be nominated by their colleagues, students, parents, or other system partners.
The board received a total of 18 nominations this year.
