4-H club members make bridges

The second meeting of the Mimosa 4-H Engineering Club was held on May 12.

Once all members were present, we started the election of officers. After many nominations, our president is Nadia, our vice-president is Sam, our secretary is Skyla, and our press reporter is Sarah.

Nadia opened the meeting with the 4-H pledge.

We then watched a presentation on how to build bridges.

We learned about forces acting on bridges such as tension, gravity, compression, etc.

Our attention was then directed to the back table, where there were multiple bags that we could use.

Each bag consisted of: 100 plastic straws, 10 big straws, a wingspan of tape, and a wingspan of string. We had 45 minutes to construct a bridge that would withstand a weight (loose coins) on a gap of 30cm.

When all members were done constructing, we tested the bridges in the kitchen between two tables. The three strongest bridges won.

Nadia then closed the meeting with the 4-H Motto.
