10 cruisers struck

“I’m just thankful that my officers weren’t seriously injured or killed at the hands of other drivers during these storms,” said OPP Traffic Inspector Ian Chappell.

The OPP continue to tally the expenses incurred after 10 cruisers were struck by drivers during the most recent winter storm in southern Ontario.

These cruisers are now rendered “out-of-service” and not available for life-saving response.

“In order to make our message easier to understand and to avoid confusion over what roads are open or closed, the OPP are urging motorists to use common sense,” police say. “If you see whiteout conditions, stay off the roads. It is clearly dangerous to drive in these conditions. Wait until there is a break in the weather before venturing out.”

OPP Sergeant Dave Rektor added, “We would like to come home to our families at the end of our shift just like you.  Please be careful around emergency service workers while we’re out there ensuring your safety.”
