Working to live

In North America, rural and suburban workers have a work ethic that just won’t stop.

It’s great people love to work, but workers do need a break and should take it.

This subject was actually something discussed in our company Newsletter recently. We encouraged staff to make good use of their vacation. Rather than use this spare time away from the office to get caught up at home, or work elsewhere, employees should get some time off and enjoy.

In hindsight, that advice may be a bit like the pot calling the kettle black, since our own personal time to wind down is quite limited.

Finding a healthy balance between work and time off is no doubt a challenge, often exacerbated by financial worries, peculiar shifts that don’t lend themselves to days off, or even the challenge of organizing time away when both parents work.

While there can be numerous excuses to avoid time off, under the current laws, employees do get paid while away. In most cases it is two weeks, and for longer-tenured employees it can stretch into weeks of vacation.

Summer holidays are drawing to a close.

We encourage all readers to get out and see something different, catch up on some sleep and especially enjoy some quality time with your family and friends.

Before we know it, summer will be over.
