Windows and energy conservation

Windows and doors have the potential to lose 60 to 70 per cent of the expensive energy produced in your home.

There are high energy saving windows available but too many builders and homeowners opt for what they think is a less expensive option rather than only slightly more expensive, but energy saving, high performance windows.

Within  a few years, windows will  pay for themselves with greatly reduced energy costs. Savings on energy bills can run from 50 to 75% depending on the home.

High performance windows will have insulated frames and sashes with an R Value between R8 and R12 depending on the window style and profile, compared to hollow frames and sashes with an R Value of R1.

Standard window thermal glass units of clear glass (no Low E) have a heat loss component of 70 to 75%. Adding Low E glass reduces the heat loss to between 52 and 65% depending on the type of Low E glass used.

High performance windows have thermal glass units with commercial Low E glass that reduce heat loss (or gain in the summer) to between 5 and 13% depending on whether one or both interior glass services are coated.

Whatever age your home, the windows you choose will make all the difference in your comfort and whether your energy costs are as low as possible.
