Wellington North Ward 3 councillor Mark Goetz resigns

Wellington North Ward 3 councillor Mark Goetz has resigned from his position, effective June 30.

“After much consideration, because I am a new business owner, which needs my full attention at this time, I feel I am not able to give the time or commitment required to be councillor of Ward 3 in Wellington North,” Goetz said near the end of the June 22 council  meeting.

“It is with regret that I … respectfully resign my position.”

He went on to thank residents, staff and council members for their support.

“I have very much enjoyed my journey and learned a great deal of how our municipality operates and the challenges that council and staff face on a day-to-day basis,” said Goetz.

Mayor Andy Lennox offered his regrets.

“I’m sorry to see you go, but I understand the reasons you’re going. I thank you for your service to your community,” said Lennox.

Each councillor wished Goetz well in his future endeavours.

“It’s a pleasure having you here. It’s unfortunate that you’re leaving, but I think we all understand the circumstances. We wish you the best,” said councillor Dan Yake.

Councillor Steve McCabe said he thought it takes a big person to step down from the position.

“I respect your decision; sad to see you go, it’s been a pleasure; you will be missed,” said councillor Sherry Burke.

Council will now consider whether to appoint a new councillor or hold a by-election. Township staff will prepare a report on options to fill the vacant Ward 3 seat.

Mayor Lennox said he expects the report to be on the agenda for the next council meeting on July 13, when council will officially declare the seat vacant.

Council has 60 days from declaring the seat vacant to make a decision to appoint someone or hold a by-election.

One option other municipalities in the same situation have chosen is appointing the person who finished second in the previous election – in this case Jens Dam – but council may appoint anyone who is a qualified elector in the township. If council opts for a by-election, a nomination deadline must occur within 60 days and voting must take place 45 days after nomination day.

Goetz was first elected as Ward 3 councillor in 2010. He was re-elected in the municipal election last year with 44.3 per cent of the vote.
