Wellington North recognized for tree planting initiatives by Green Legacy

Green Legacy Program chair Mark Van Patter presented a plaque to Wellington North council on Sept. 29 in recognition of the program’s 10th anniversary.

A brass plate was given to each of Wellington County’s municipalities to thank them for the 1.5 million trees planted since the Green Legacy Program’s inception.

Van Patter specifically highlighted work done at Luther Marsh and the nursery established there.

Because the original nursery is located in Puslinch, the new location in Wellington North “makes every school within 40km of a nursery and with more students to help we can use less seasonal staff and cut back on CO2 emissions,” Van Patter said.

Over 3,500 students participate in the Green Legacy Program each year.

In 2010, the initiative was recognized by the United Nations under the Billion Tree Campaign to fight climate change.
