Wellington North receives funding for bridge rehabilitation

Wellington North announced July 6 that they received funding from the federal and provincial governments for just under $1 million for rehabilitation to the Cst. Rick Hopkins Bridge.

Perth-Wellington MP Gary Schellenberger and Cambridge MPP Kathryn McGarry were present at Murphy Park in Mount Forest to announce the funding.

Perth-Wellington MPP Randy Pettapiece who wrote a letter of support for the township was also in attendance.

Both federal and provincial governments will provide $496,326 for a total of $992,652 toward the project. The bridge, located on Highway 6, will undergo a series of structural improvements including railing, curb, sidewalk and beam replacements.

Critical infrastructure

“The bridge is a critical piece of transportation infrastructure in Wellington North and provides strategic economic development linkages for our community and other throughout Southern Ontario,” said Wellington North Mayor Andy Lennox.

Wellington North CAO Michael Givens said the township is hoping to go to tender for this project over the winter months and they are anticipating the final cost to be under $1.5 million.

The government funding came from the Small Communities Fund, which is designed to provide funding for priority public infrastructure projects that deliver on key local needs.
