Wellington North may soon see an increased number of community safety zones.
After putting school zone signs on Conestoga Street North, Walton Street and Eliza Street in Arthur, on June 8 council considered the formation of a community safety zone committee to proceed with community safety zones in the township.
“Do we need a committee to put up a couple of signs?” asked councillor Steve McCabe.
CAO Michael Givens said it would involve more than just putting up signs.
“This process would be much more in depth … it would take place in conjunction with the OPP,” said Givens.
After the discussion, council decided to establish a committee to investigate the merits of community safety zones.
The committee would be requested to prepare a report to give to council.
“I think you risk putting the onus as it relates to enforcement at a level that can’t be maintained,” said Givens. “I do think there is a police presence or should be a police presence around the school areas anyway.”
Community safety zones are to inform drivers they are entering a zone the community has designated as an area where the safety of children/citizens is paramount. They usually coincide with reduced speeds and heftier fines.
