Wellington North council shows support for Royal Canadian Legion

Wellington North council demonstrated the community’s continued dedication to supporting its veterans and the act of remembering at its meeting on Oct. 20.

Council was approached by the Royal Canadian Legion about purchasing advertising space in the Legion’s Military Service Recognition Book. The project’s proceeds will cover the cost of printing and distributing the publication, along with assisting with many other Legion initiatives province-wide.

Councillor Dan Yake said, being home to the “most patriotic village in Canada” it is a no-brainer to offer their support to the project.

“We have two good Legions in our community and there’s a quarter-page, full-colour ad for $500 and I think in this community we can find $500 to support that, not only for our two legions but for the other veterans in this community,” he said.

Administrative officer Mike Givens expressed concern that there wasn’t likely enough money in township reserves to pay for the entire ad.

“I’ll donate $100 out of my council stipend this month,” quipped Yake.

The other councillors and mayor Ray Tout agreed they would do the same.

“And I’ll make up the difference,” said Givens – referring to the $45 in taxes remaining.
