‘We certainly are welcoming everybody’: walk for Parkinson’s set for Sept. 10 in Fergus

FERGUS – The annual Walk for Parkinson’s is fast-approaching.

Hosted by the Parkinson’s Society of Southwestern Ontario (PSSO), the Wellington-Dufferin group is hosting its event on Sept. 10 at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

“All funds raised stay local to provide vital services and programs, in addition to funding for research, education and advocacy initiatives that impact the 10,000 people living with Parkinson’s in Southwestern Ontario,” stated a PSSO press release.

Participants can register online as an individual or a team.

Online registrations and donations are encouraged, but PSSO will accept cash and cheque donations as well.

For more information, to register or to donate, visit walkforpd.ca.

“If unable to attend, participants can still collect pledges and walk their own way,” the release states.

The Wellington-Dufferin group will be welcoming participants starting at 9am, but won’t start the walk until 10am, said Chris Ecclestone, facilitator for the Wellington Dufferin support group.

The walk is “for any fitness level,” said Ecclestone, adding those who don’t want to walk are still welcome to come out, as there will be some additional activities.

There will be a barbecue,  games and a raffle, with the event running until around noon.

“We certainly are welcoming everybody,” said  Ecclestone.

The PSSO Wellington-Dufferin support group meets once a month and are “delighted to be able to meet in-person again,” said Ecclestone, noting it started to do so in April.

“We really … welcome people to come and just hang out and have some fun … I know that there are people living with Parkinson’s who aren’t involved with the support group, so anybody who’d like to come out and find out more information, we’ll be able to [provide it] … at that time too,” said Ecclestone.

“We just look forward to the camaraderie; it’s nice to be able to …  get back together again, and share some information about Parkinson’s, which is really important.”
