With more than 20,000 students passing through the doors of Guelph Lake Nature Centre each year, it’s getting harder and harder to find someone in the community who doesn’t have a memory about their time spent on the shores of Guelph Lake.
Those fond memories recently helped secure a $150,000 donation from the W.C. Wood Foundation toward the construction of the new Guelph Lake Nature Centre.
Susan Frasson of the foundation thinks fondly of her own days as a child at the centre, as well as the times she has accompanied her own children there.
“Those visits help everyone – students and adults – foster a much deeper appreciation for the natural world around us.” Frasson said in a press release. “The new Guelph Lake Nature Centre will impact so many more people, including generations of children and grandchildren in our community.”
Increasing the access that children and adults have to the centre can only help the environment.
“Kids have a natural connection to all that is weird and wonderful in nature; as we get older, we often lose a bit of that connection.” said Greg Meredith, senior resource interpreter at Guelph Lake in a press release.
More than one-third of the funds have been raised toward the construction of a new facility within Guelph Lake park. Once built, the new facility will expose more than 200,000 park visitors to nature-based programming and learning opportunities.
