Update: 15 COVID-19 outbreaks at hospitals, LTC homes across region

WELLINGTON COUNTY – Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) has declared 15 COVID-19 outbreaks at health care facilities across the region, with close to 140 cumulative cases.

Current outbreaks, as of Jan. 5, include:

  • Caressant Care Arthur, long-term care home (declared Dec. 27), one resident case, three staff cases;
  • Royal Terrace Long-Term and Residential Care in Palmerston (Dec. 28), one resident case, five staff cases;
  • Wellington Terrace Long-Term Care Home in Aboyne (Dec. 27), eight resident cases (one death), 10 staff cases;
  • Eden House long-term care home in Guelph/Eramosa (Jan. 1), seven staff cases;
  • Homewood Health Centre, Trillium Unit in Guelph (Dec. 21), four resident cases, five staff cases;
  • Guelph General Hospital 4East (Dec. 16), three patient cases, three staff cases;
  • Avalon Care Centre, long-term care in Orangeville (Dec. 27), seven staff cases;
  • Chartwell Montgomery Village retirement home in Orangeville (Dec. 27), four staff cases;
  • Village of Riverside Glen long-term care home in Guelph (Dec. 28), 11 resident cases, 12 staff cases;
  • Elliott Community, long-term care home in Guelph (Dec. 31), 16 staff cases;
  • St. Joseph Health Centre in Guelph, two separate outbreaks in units in the long-term care home (Jan. 3), two resident cases, four staff cases;
  • Dufferin Oaks, long-term care home in Shelburne (Dec. 31), 11 staff cases;
  • Shelburne Long-Term Care Home (Dec. 31), eight resident cases, four staff cases;
  • LaPointe Fisher, long-term care home in Guelph (Jan. 3), 10 staff cases.

Recent outbreaks declared over include:

  • The Elliott Community retirement home in Guelph (Dec. 13 to 24; new outbreak declared on Dec. 31); and
  • Palmerston and District Hospital (Dec. 9 to 28).

For an outbreak to be declared over, 14 days must pass since the last symptomatic or positive individual is reported, according to WDGPH spokesperson Anna Vanderlaan.

Hospitalizations

The number of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 across the WDGPH region has remained steady over the last two weeks, despite a massive surge in cases fuelled primarily by the Omicron variant.

As of Jan. 5 there are 16 people with COVID in hospitals in the region, including three in an intensive care unit.
