Township approves road closure, fee reimbursement for Marden Marathon

A second popular fundraiser is expected to go forward after Guelph-Eramosa council approved a road closure near Marden.

Two weeks after approving road closures for the April 27 Avery’s Bravery Race in Rockwood, council has granted a similar request to organizers of the annual Marden Marathon.

The event – featuring 5km, 10km and half marathon races, as well as a “family fun run” – takes place on April 13 at the Royal Distributing Athletic Performance Centre.

The route for the annual fundraiser, which is organized by the Elora Road Christian School and benefits the Groves Memorial Hospital Foundation in Fergus, follows Wellington Road 30 west to Wellington Road 39, then north to Wellington Road 51 and east to 4th Line East.

Most of the route is on county roads, with the only Guelph-Eramosa road requiring closure being 4th Line from Wellington Road 51 to Sideroad 14.

“The organizers of [the event] have confirmed that the OPP will be attending and assisting with traffic control,” clerk Meaghen Reid said in a report to council.

Council unanimously approved the local road closure – conditional on insurance requirements, notice signs and county road closure approvals – as well as again donating back to Groves hospital the $2-per-participant fee required by the township for such events.
