Time to change your batteries

CENTRE WELLINGTON – You’ve probably changed your clocks; now it’s time to change your batteries.

Centre Wellington Fire and Rescue recommends all residents take the time to install a new quality battery in smoke and carbon monoxide alarms when they change their clocks. If you haven’t done it yet, it’s time.

“Working smoke and CO alarms are mandatory in all homes across Ontario and should be installed on every storey of your home and outside all sleeping areas” says fire chief Brad Patton.

Both alarm systems require good batteries to function as designed. They are also required to be changed every 10 years. The manufacturer date is stamped on safety alarms to ensure compliance.

Almost two-thirds of home fire deaths happen in homes where the smoke alarms aren’t working, or that don’t have smoke alarms at all, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

Carbon monoxide is also incredibly deadly, therefore changing the batteries in both detectors is imperative.

The fire department encourages all residents to fill out a Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm self-verification form, to report that they have the legally required smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms and that they are in working order.
