Theatre Guild honoured at ACT-CO festival

Once again, the Century Theatre Guild of Hillsburgh has been honoured at the annual ACT-CO Festival for their recent production of Remember Me, by Sam Bobrick.

Brigida Scholten received the award for Best Performance by an actress in a leading role in a comedy. Scholten has appeared in a number of Theatre Guild productions in dramatic roles, including Gaslight, Murder by The Book, An Inspector Calls, and Deathtrap.

In his citation, the adjudicator said, “Joy is the key word in both the character and the actor in bringing Mary to life. In a role which runs the gamut of conflict, uncertainty and euphoria in a plausible impossible world, she always found the balance while making us laugh with her and consider her issues at the same time.”

Martyn Worsnop was nominated as Best Director of a comedy, and also for Best Sound Design (with Danny Moore). Both Scholten and Worsnop will appear on stage in the upcoming production of Staff Room, by Joan Burrows, playing May 23 to June 1.

The ACT-CO Festival, run by the Association of Community Theatre, Central Ontario, is the culmination of a year in which plays are adjudicated by a theatre professional. It is one of the ways community theatre groups learn their craft and improve their skills.

Next season, the Guild will enter in the festival again, with the comedy Snow White and the Famous Seven by Jo Phoenix and Dead on Nine, a mystery-thriller by Jack Popplewell.
