Temporary water fountain erupts near Fergus cenotaph

On May 19 Centre Wellington director of infrastructure Colin Baker explained the 80-foot geyser of water here earlier in the day resulted from construction currently underway.

He first noted that Drexler Construction was contracted by the municipality to undertake the reconstruction of services at Norman Craig Square.

Baker explained the contractor was in the process of installing an alternate water line when the incident occurred.

“As they were charging the temporary water line with pressurized water … it basically came apart.” The water, he estimated, was at 90psi (pounds per square inch).

“When that happened, the water shot straight up into the air,” Baker said.

The area was isolated and the water turned off within 20 minutes, Baker added.

He was however uncertain what caused the water line to come apart in the first place.
