St. John Catholic School students celebrate grad differently this year

ARTHUR – St. John Catholic School in Arthur celebrated its Grade 8 Graduation on June 23 a little bit differently than in years past.

“We know this isn’t the grad that any of us envisioned for you, but we are trying in some small way to make it special,” said principal Victoria Sheehan as she greeted each Grade 8 student.

Students were presented with their certificate and a lawn sign, as well as a beautiful individualized Grad Book created by their teacher.

The book contained student work during the school year and special memories.

“Many were visibly touched that she had created this for them,” school officials say.

Brianna Tone was another one of this year’s Grade 8 graduates.

Shyla Verbeek and Lily Meszaros were the year’s valedictorians, chosen by their classmates.

Their combined speech was recorded from their individual homes to be shared with their classmates.

The speech thanked all of the teachers the students have had along the way, and one could easily tell this group of 22 students had a special bond, officials said.

“Remember you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, smarter than you think, and loved more than you know,” the speech said.

Students were surprised during the day with a video professionally prepared to celebrate their graduation, as well as another video that had been prepared by  Sheehan with baby photos, grad photos and messages from staff to wish them well.
