Speedside Church commemorates members who fought in World Wars

GUELPH/ERAMOSA – Speedside United Church will be commemorating former church members who fought in the First and Second World Wars during its Sunday service for Remembrance Day.

The church, located at 5903 Wellington Road 29, will pay tribute to its former members during its service on Nov. 7 at 9:30am.

Church member Sue Weir will honour First World War veterans Alice Hindley, a lieutenant nursing sister, and her brother George Hindley, honorary captain of the chaplains, with a presentation that will include photos and an overview of their life in the Guelph/Eramosa community and overseas.

Relatives of the Hindleys will also be in attendance, Weir said.

Another presentation will be made by Barb Lavigne on the Thring Boys: Gordon, a flight lieutenant, and soldier Jim, from the Second World War.

“It’s just been great,” Weir said of realizing the history of local former church members.

“It’s giving our church more of a soul when you have pictures, and you hear of the people that have gone before you.”

Weir also noted proof of vaccination will be required to enter the church for the service.

Members from the church, as well as others from the community, will also be setting poppies around the graves of soldiers from the First and Second World War for Remembrance Day.

Members of the community are invited to Eramosa Union Cemetery, located at 8149 Sideroad 20 (between 2nd and 3rd Line), on Nov. 11 at 11am to place poppies around the cemetery, which will be followed by two-minutes of silence.

Weir said with the pandemic, church officials held a smaller ceremony last year, but this year they’ve opened it up to anyone that would like to join them.

Members of the church are encouraging people to bring their own poppies for their family members if they wish to remember their contribution.
